Our History
Origins in Global Education
Ocean Breeze Academy traces its foundation to the lifelong dedication of Jill and Michael Duoto, two educators whose careers spanned continents and cultures. In the 1990s and early 2000s, they taught and led international schools in Japan, Singapore, and Brazil — experiences that shaped their belief in globally minded, student-centered education. Working with diverse learners across Asia and South America, they developed a deep understanding of how cultural context, language, and technology could enrich academic growth and personal development.
Founding High Bluff Academy (2003)
After returning to California, Jill and Michael founded High Bluff Academy in San Diego in 2003. Their goal was to create a school that combined rigorous academics with individualized support — a model inspired by the best practices they had observed abroad. High Bluff quickly earned a reputation for excellence in college preparation, small-group instruction, and personalized learning pathways. Many of its graduates went on to top universities, reflecting the Duotos’ commitment to nurturing both intellect and character.
Ocean Breeze Academy Today
Today Ocean Breeze Academy carries WASC accreditation and U.C. A–G and NCAA course approvals, offering AP and Honors coursework across in-person, hybrid, and online modes of instruction. The school remains family-led, grounded in the belief that relationships are the foundation of real learning.
